The SAR Gap: What Happens When Rescue Takes Longer Than Your Suit Was Designed For

There is a question every polar vessel operator must be able to answer — and most cannot.
If your crew enters the water in the most remote part of your operating area, in the worst seasonal conditions, and SAR response takes three days, will they survive?
Not: do their suits carry a valid certificate? Not: did you complete the drill log? Will they survive?

The SAR Reality in Polar Waters
In the North Sea, SAR infrastructure is mature. Helicopter coverage is dense. Response times are measured in hours.
In the Barents Sea, the Bering Sea, the Northwest Passage, and the waters surrounding the Antarctic Peninsula, the arithmetic is entirely different. SAR assets are sparse. Distances are vast. Weather windows are unpredictable. Response times in remote polar waters are routinely measured in days. In the most challenging scenarios — vessel in distress in deep ice, multiple casualties, deteriorating weather — response may extend beyond five days before rescue assets can reach survivors.
The immersion suits hanging in your vessel's muster stations were not designed for that scenario. They were certified against a standard that was not designed for it either.
What the Polar Code Requires — and What It Means for Operators
The IMO Polar Code, in force since January 2017, is unambiguous. Chapter 8 establishes a goal-based requirement: life-saving appliances in polar waters must provide thermal protection sufficient to support survival for the Maximum Expected Time of Rescue. In remote polar operating areas, the Polar Code defines that minimum as five days.
Five days. Not six hours. Not the duration of a standard certification test.
Every polar vessel operator is legally bound by this framework. Every flag state PSC officer conducting an inspection is entitled to ask whether the LSA equipment aboard meets the goal-based standard — not merely whether it carries a certificate. Every Recognized Organization endorsing a vessel's Polar Ship Certificate is on record affirming that the vessel is fit for polar operations.
No conventional foam immersion suit has been independently validated to demonstrate five-day thermal survivability under simultaneous polar conditions. The certificate they carry was issued against MSC.81(70) — a standard developed for temperate rescue scenarios, with test conditions that include no wind chill, no sub-zero air temperature, and water temperatures well above those found in polar operating areas. That certificate does not constitute evidence of Polar Code compliance. It constitutes evidence of something else entirely.
The Liability Exposure Operators Are Not Pricing
When an abandonment event occurs in polar waters, the legal and insurance exposure does not turn on whether the suits carried a certificate. It turns on whether the operator discharged their duty of care under the applicable goal-based framework.
A flag state investigation will examine whether the operator's safety management system addressed the known limitations of the LSA equipment for the specific operating area. A P&I club assessing a wrongful death or personal injury claim will examine whether a reasonable operator in that position — operating in polar waters, aware of the Polar Code's METR requirement, aware of the publicly documented thermal limitations of conventional foam suits — took adequate steps to protect their crew.
The Polar Code has been in force for nearly a decade. The goal-based METR requirement is not obscure. The limitations of conventional immersion suits in polar conditions have been documented in independent testing, raised at IMO working group level, and are the subject of ongoing regulatory development at multiple flag states. Operators, DPAs, and fleet managers who have not addressed this gap in their safety management systems are not protected by ignorance. They are exposed by it.
That exposure attaches personally. It attaches to the company. And it attaches to every professional in the chain of responsibility who signed off on polar operations without examining whether the LSA equipment aboard was adequate for the conditions the vessel was certified to enter.
What Closing the Gap Requires
In August 2022, the Arctic 25+ completed a six-hour independent immersion test at Ergopro's facility in Trondheim under conditions no international standard requires: 0°C water, −20°C air, 10 m/s wind producing a −30°C wind chill, with 500 grams of water — the maximum ingress from a jump entry — added to the interior of the suit before immersion. Core temperature dropped by 0.4°C over six hours. The test was terminated at the ethical limit. The pool had frozen solid around the suit.
The Ergopro report concluded that the subject could have continued safely for a considerably longer period. The data points toward protection well beyond the six-hour ceiling — directly relevant to the five-day METR standard the Polar Code establishes.
Closing the SAR gap does not require regulatory approval or a new certification framework. It requires operators to ask the right question and act on the answer.
The Question Regulators Are Already Asking
Flag states are moving. The Chilean Navy's DIRECTEMAR has addressed polar LSA adequacy directly in communications to vessel operators in Antarctic waters. Lloyd's Register has engaged the Polar Code goal-based framework in advisory capacity with operators across multiple flag states. The USCG Research and Development Center has examined polar immersion suit performance under conditions that exceed conventional certification parameters.
The regulatory direction is not ambiguous. The question is whether operators are ahead of it or behind it.
The next PSC inspection in a polar port may be the moment that question gets answered for you. The next abandonment event will answer it with finality.
